So often we’re surprised when life doesn’t go our way.
We’re shocked when our circumstances suddenly change.
Sometimes, things shift ever so slightly or sometimes things shift in ways that feel catastrophic, at least in that moment. And through it all we’re so quick to fight it. It’s in our nature. We fight that which we do not know, choosing instead to seek solace in the circumstances, the way of life we do understand. It’s so comfortable and warm like your bed during the dead of winter. You know you have to get out of it, but it’s just so difficult to muster up the courage to scale across the ice cold floor.
THE UNKNOWN
It can be scary…
It’s frightening, maddening even, to wade into the unknown. The waters feeling so deep and sinister because we can’t see the bottom. We can’t see where our next foot should land, what our steps should be. And when we look back we can’t see where we’ve been, it’s been covered up before we have a chance to remember what was there.
It’s in these moments in our life where we’re being delicately pushed outside our comfort zone, but that’s not what we’re thinking. We’re thinking about all the what ifs, the uncertainty, the future. We’re thinking that everything is messed up and there’s nothing we can do to make it better.
We’re feeling disheartened because everything we worked so hard for seems to be slipping away. It’s like someone is pulling out the carpet from underneath you and you are flailing around grasping for anything to hold on to so you don’t hurt yourself when you inevitably fall?
But what if…
for just a moment we looked back?
What if we looked at everything happening in a completely different light?
Think back to a time in your life when circumstances were changing. Circumstances beyond your control. Things you did not want nor wish to change, but they were changing regardless. Think about the worry that surrounded it. It was soul crushing, terrifying, exhausting. Trying to fight something you knew was already underway, something you simply had to accept, but couldn’t.
BUT DID IT CHANGE YOU?
Now think about the present. How did that moment shape your life?
Did it help you become the person you are today? Perhaps it led you to a person, place or thing you might never have found otherwise. Maybe you’re still waiting to understand exactly how those circumstances changed your life.
The point is this…
We never want our circumstances to change until we’re ready. We want changes on our terms, when we agree to them. But life doesn’t happen like that and it can feel downright infuriating when things don’t go our way.
But what if they aren’t supposed to?
They’re not supposed to work out exactly the way we want. What if we’re being pushed out of our comfort zone into the unknown because without it some of us would be stuck where we are for the rest of our lives. What if we’re meant to do more, be more. What if right over the horizon, on the other side of all the changes and discomfort is an amazing adventure? Perhaps, like they say, the best is yet to come. And we’ve been so slow to change that life has decided to speed up the process by changing our circumstances for us?
What if instead of fighting them we boldly and courageously confronted them and then accepted them. Cleared our mind from all the negative and realized that in the long run we’ll be better from the changes. There has to be something better waiting for us on the other side.
What if we realized these changes are a gift. They’re there to help us make necessary strides in our life, strides we didn’t even know we were meant to take. It’s in those moments we can truly start to embrace the changes that are happening in our lives.
And that is where the most change will happen…
It will happen inside of us. When we learn to accept the changing circumstances in our life we’ll start to feel free. Once that acceptance hits your heart it’s almost an automatic response. I’ve felt it. I’ve felt how it feels to truly just embrace the change, the change I was fighting so hard to avoid, and the feeling of lightness that came in the place of all the worry and fear was truly amazing.
You’re being led in a specific direction for a reason and even though you might be scared remember to accept the chances wholeheartedly and you’ll be fine.
I promise.
