Curious about Tieks?
My Tieks Review will help solve all your ballet flat woes.
I’m sure you understand my struggle in finding shoes that fit, flatter and more importantly feel good for the entire day. I’m just going to put it out there, but generic women’s flats have to be some of the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever had the displeasure of wearing. That’s why I finally purchased my Tieks.
There’s a whole process involved in getting flats.
First, you have to find ones that fit just right. Then once you find them you have the must dreaded “breaking” in period where they rub you raw and give you horrible blisters. Then you wear them so much because you’ve done all this legwork to get them to feel right and before you know it they start to look less than flattering.
Then you have to repeat the entire awful cycle…
It’s enough to drive a woman to the brink of sanity.
While I’ve got some great news that will keep your sanity safely intact.
If you haven’t heard of Tieks yet let’s get you acquainted!
I found these shoes while searching for new flats, well over a year ago. I’ve literally been lusting after these shoes ever since. I would look at their adorable boutiek and all the colors contemplating if it was worth the price tag. It’s a pretty hefty price tag, but I’ll get to that in a minute.
So this Christmas imagine my joy when my husband and my best friend each got me a Tieks present. My husband ordered the exact ones I asked for and my bestie got me a gift card. I was doing a happy dance everyday waiting for the shoes to arrive. I’m not ashamed to admit that I pleaded and convinced my husband to let me try on my shoes well before Christmas. I couldn’t handle myself!
So let’s dive into my thoughts about these awesome shoes!
What are Tieks?
Tieks are handmade ballet flats whose claim to fame is “the ballet flat reinvented.” And reinvent they did. Their ballet flats solve several big issues that aren’t addressed by other flats. They’re flexible, durable, comfortable and stylish. They focus on making one style of flat and then give you a ton of options for colors and textures. They even have vegan flats.
When I opened up the shipping box this is what I was greeted with. It’s adorable and chic. I love bright colors and their signature box does not disappoint.
My girls instantly wanted the flower to use as a headband. They both stared at it googly-eyed for awhile and kept commenting on how beautiful it was. I gave it to them and they wore it for the entire rest of the day. Thanks Tieks for also entertaining my children!
Inside, I found the shoes delicately folded up. I’m actually glad they come like this because I’m pretty sure I would have been nervous I would ruin them if I folded them up like this. They also came with a small drawstring bag so you can stow them when you’re not using them and need to stick them in your purse (that’s them in the picture below) and a tote bag to put your shoes in when you switch over to Tieks.
I was impressed they could fit all of that in that tiny box!
It’s All in the Details
Upon opening the box I found a handwritten note.
A handwritten note!
In this day and age, I’ve yet to find many companies thanking you for your purchase and telling you they hope you enjoy their product. It was the sweetest little touch and even my husband, who could care less about comfortable ballet flats was impressed.
This type of thoughtfulness is what sets this company apart from other companies. It makes you instantly feel contacted to the brand and also helps to personalize the experience. You know it’s not some machine putting your order together, but a real-live human! Imagine that.
So this is where it gets tricky and ultimately why I wrote this post. My first pair of Tieks didn’t fit! They were so tight and uncomfortable. I tried everything to try to stretch them out, but nothing was working. I was upset, but they have this amazing exchange program so I held out hope that I could find one that fit my foot.
Their exchange process is out of this world. All you do is order the other size you want and they arrive at your door free of charge! Then they give you an astounding 2 weeks to keep both and decide which one you like best. As long as you don’t wear them out of the house you can wear them all day while you’re trying to decide.
That’s what I did with my first pair. Since the 10 didn’t fit I ordered an 11 and would wear them around the house trying to decide. When you’ve decided you simply send back the size you didn’t want with the pre-paid label they stuck in the other shoe they sent. It’s so simple.
Although for me it didn’t work out like that.
Neither ended up fitting me right. The 10 was too small and the 11 was too big.
But again I contacted Tieks customer service and they said to just ship both boxes back with the pre-paid label and it would be taken care of.
Try, Try & Try Again
So I had no idea what to do at this point.
If it weren’t for my bestie I probably wouldn’t have ordered another pair, but she had given me a gift card so I tried again. I ordered the same exact color (basic black) in a size 10 and waited for their arrival.
When they came I really wanted them to fit. I don’t wear high heels or wedges because I value being comfortable and being able to keep up with my kids. So I bit my lip tried them on and drumroll please…
they felt completely different!
Remember how I told you they’re handmade? Well, the only thing I can guess is that each pair is different because of this fact. So if you’ve tried them in the past and they didn’t work or are worried they wouldn’t work for you I’m living proof that they do!
Fit and Feel
They are by far my favorite shoes. I love that they have support on the bottom. I can walk in them all day without a problem. They hug my wide size 10 feet in just the right places without squeezing them so tight I can’t feel them.
What I love even more is the options they have for women with larger and wider feet. They offer sizes all the way up to 13. I’ve always had wide and large feet for a woman and I remember times, even recently, where it’s frustrating to find shoes that fit me just right. It can actually be pretty discouraging.
I’ve found that the first couple of days they were a little tight, but they stretched the more and more I walked around. They have slowly begun to mold to my feet. The leather sole is soft on my foot and is sewn into the shoe. That may seem silly but my last flats had the sole glued in and so after wearing them for a couple of months the fabric starting coming apart inside.
The Price Tag
In all honesty their shoes are expensive. They range in price from $175 – $265. I bought the basic black ones at $175 because I know I will wear them the most.
So how in the world do you justify buying these shoes?
This was my sticking point for so long. That’s why I lusted after them for over a year. I just couldn’t picture buying one pair of shoes for $175. But then I had an epiphany of sorts. I started thinking about all the pairs of flats I’ve purchased throughout the years that didn’t fit, were uncomfortable or I wore out after wearing them for a year. I realized that although I’d never dropped this much on a pair of shoes I had dropped an equal or greater total amount on flats I never wore, hated or wore through.
These are made better than any shoes I’ve ever purchased and if my gut is correct I’ll have these shoes for years to come.
So that’s it! There’s a lot of reviews out there and I just wanted to give you my honest Tieks review from someone who was almost convinced they weren’t going to work.
Ready to grab a pair of your own? Head over to Tieks Boutiek to look at all the different styles and colors they have.
I’d love to know your thoughts. Is it worth it to buy a pair of shoes like this? Have you found any other flats that you’re in love with that you could recommend to others?
